Q: Do I have to validate my code?
A: You should. The code should be validated. Validation "means" there should be no code underlined in red, no code highlighted in yellow, the DOCTYPE, html tag and meta tag character set must be correctly. Note that many of the pre-canned pages from the publisher do not have this while freshly started pages do have this.

Q: Do my pages have to demonstrate originality?
A: They should have originality. You are creating a site that you can use in your portfolio to highlight your skills. Copying straight from the book does not demonstrate knowledge. It is a good idea to add comments to your code as well.
