How to Find Jobs in Inbound Marketing

The fall inbound-marketing-certificationsemester is almost over which means I will be completing the last assignments for my ISM 7500: Information Analytics - Inbound Information Technology class . I am excited that I am newly certified in Inbound Marketing but I began to think how could I make the most of my new skills.  I plan to put my skills to use to develop my online business, but what if I was looking for a job in inbound marketing, what would I do and how would I start my search.

The last few jobs I have had, I found on www.indeed.com, so I decided to start there.  I began my search entering “inbound marketing” in the what section and “Michigan” in the where section.  Many jobs came up, but they were not all for inbound marketing, many just had inbound and marketing in the job description so I decided to try a different keyword.  I searched again using SEO in the what section and my results were much better.

I found small and large companies with openings in SEO.  Some of the companies include ADP, Universal McCann, Hello Innovation, Quicken Loans, Sachse Construction, Whirlpool, GM and Learning Care Group.   There were almost as many different titles for the jobs I found as there were jobs.  Some of the titles include SEO Specialist, Internet Marketing Specialist, Manager, Search Engine Marketing, Social Media Guru, Digital Marketing Specialist, Web Strategy Marketing Manager, Digital Content Manager and Inbound Marketing Specialist.

As I studied the job descriptions, I discovered that not all of the jobs required a degree but most of them wanted the candidate applying to have 2-5 years of experience.  I also found that many of the jobs expected a lot from the role.  They wanted the jobseeker to be able to create, develop, and implement content creation and strategy.  The responsibilities often included that the jobseeker understand SEO tools such as Google Analytics and they expected them to manage the metrics for the Inbound Marketing Strategy.  Some of the jobs required that the prospective candidate have experience managing an online staff.

The jobs expected a lot from the role!

Most of the jobs had descriptions that listed responsibilities more ideally suited for 2 or 3 people.  This let me know they probably had no one in the company that is an expert in SEO so they have no idea it would be impossible for anyone to do all that they are asking in less than 80 hours a week.  It was encouraging to see that there were jobs right here in Michigan in inbound marketing, however some of the job roles and responsibilities were intimidating.

One question I had was how would someone get enough experience to qualify for one of these jobs.  What is the best way to create your resume and prepare for an interview?  Are there associations for Inbound Marketing professionals?  Naturally, I searched the internet for articles on how to get a job in inbound marketing and I found a great blog post on HubSpot’s website -- http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/33467/How-to-Get-Hired-as-an-Inbound-Marketer.aspx

The good news is that there are many jobs in Inbound Marketing and SEO and the field continues to grow as more and more companies recognize the importance of having inbound marketing and SEO professionals on their team.

Now that I am certified, I am a member of the HubSpot Academy LinkedIn group of individuals who have also passed the certification exam.  On their site, additional job offerings are detailed. http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=2045641&trk=group_shared_premium_jobs-h-logo
